Swiss Army Knife Slashes Costs

A leading recycling services provider has invested in a pair of multi-tasking JCB 5CX Wastemaster backhoe loaders which are cutting time and costs at its facilities in Wales.

For a household waste recycling site where space is at a premium, maximising efficiency is key to maximising margins. Inefficient equipment and a lack of productivity cost time and ultimately money.

As the largest social enterprise recycler in the UK, Bryson Recycling understands these challenges all too well which is why the firm made the decision to invest in two JCB 5CX PRO Wastemasters – designed specifically for use on household waste recycling sites.

Extreme Versatility

Bryson Recycling has its headquarters in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland and the firm is responsible for collecting and processing recyclable materials from over 50% of homes in Northern Ireland as well as providing collection services for garden and residual waste.

It also operates five household waste recycling centres across Conwy and Denbighshire in North Wales. It is here that the versatile JCB 5CX Wastemaster models have been deployed and are already reaping time and cost rewards for the company.

For an operation this size, responsible for processing large volumes and a broad range of different waste materials you need machinery that is robust, versatile and productive. And given the complex nature of the work a recycling specialist does – one that has been designed specifically for the task in hand.

Bryson Recycling has traditionally used static waste compactors at its sites. But the two versatile JCB 5CX PRO Wastemaster models are able to complete the waste compacting requirements as well as a series of additional roles.

Using a jaw bucket attachment on the back actor, the backhoes can pick, sort and compress the waste within a container - meaning more waste can fit in and fewer costly collections are required. They can also move containers using an integrated skip hook at the front end and with excellent roading capabilities, they can operate across all five sites in Wales.

Bryson Recycling Site Manager, Dan McCabe said: “We chose JCB due to their long-standing reputation for quality craftmanship. We read in the trade press that the 5CX Wastemaster was specifically designed for household waste recycling sites and that certainly spiked our initial interest."

After seeing it in action at a demonstration event we were confident that the machine would have a positive impact on our operations and that has definitely proved to be the case. We refer to the 5CX PRO Wastemaster as a ‘Swiss Army knife’ as it has so many capabilities which benefit the waste management industry.

Compaction Perfection

Dan McCabe | Bryson Recycling Site Manager

To maximise efficiency on household waste recycling sites like Bryson’s, it is crucial to compact material and maximise weighbridge loads, in turn minimising collections. With this in mind, JCB designed their new 5CX Wastemaster to maximise loads by up to 4 times (depending on the material) with attachments like the JCB Jaw Bucket or Compaction Wheel.

The unique four stabiliser legs provide extra height for improved visibility into the container and the 5CX Wastemaster is fitted with a large 7.10m excavator boom that can reach the full length of a container. These features have enabled Bryson Recycling to increase their capacity and save money.

Bryson Recycling Site Manager, Dan McCabe said: “Prior to this purchase we used static waste compactors which were expensive to maintain and run in comparison to the productivity they could achieve. By using the JCB models we have surpassed the capacity we could previously process with the static waste compactor and are saving costs in the process. Furthermore, the 5CX models stand out for their ability to raise on four jacklegs for greater visibility, move waste containers with the front hook, while also having the added flexibility of driving the machine quickly from one site to another."

Perfect Pick

The 5CX Wastemaster can pick and sort material, prior to shredding or to move material between containers. The Wastemaster's integral forks, built into the standard Hydraulic Loader Quickhitch, can lift up to 4,500lbs (2,000kg) of palletised loads. With the Wastemaster, it's easy to reorganise material inside containers. That means loads are maximised and everything can be put in the right place.

Road Ready

Given Bryson Recycling operates across numerous sites, the ability to travel quickly and safely between them, without the requirement for separate machinery, is another efficiency and productivity boost the road legal JCB 5CX Wastemaster offers.

With a 4-speed transmission (complete with Torquelock), the JCB 5CX Wastemaster can travel at up to 25mph (40km/h). JCB's Smoothride System minimises bounce loadings; this means increased operator comfort, increased travel speed, reduced material spillage and reduces wear on the loader arms. The Wastemaster also has a specially designed all-JCB powertrain to maximise efficiency and fuel economy.

JCB combined the superb powertrain with our innovative EcoRoad technology, designed to optimise efficiency and productivity when roading. EcoRoad can actually reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%.

For savvy customers like Bryson Recycling who want to get the very most from their machines, the 5CX PRO Wastemaster is perfect. If one site has shutdown days or if machines are only used for part days, you can just drive it between sites.

A Master Of All Trades

With its specialist picking and sorting capability, compaction credentials and ability to cover multiple sites, the JCB 5CX Wastemaster has seen off Bryson Recycling’s previous solution. And this Swiss Army Knife of the waste and recycling world has slashed time and costs in the process.
