In the bustling heart of Bristol, Brandwells Construction stands as a stalwart of the South-West groundworks sector. Founded in 1973 by Andy Dowden, and now led by his son Chris as Managing Director, this family-run business has gone from strength to strength over the years.

Andy’s passion for the construction industry along with his determination to ensure investment in personal growth within his team has enabled the father and son team to build a robust business which has stood the test of time.

With an extensive workforce of 275 and overseeing up to 30 active sites at a time, Brandwells achieved a record turnover of £62 million in 2022 and celebrated their 50th anniversary last year - cementing their reputation for reliability and quality in the industry.

This reputation is reinforced through their trusted partnership with JCB, a name synonymous with those same qualities. Just as Brandwells prioritises delivering high-quality results for its clients, JCB machinery provides the reliability, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology that the Brandwells team relies on every day.

By partnering with JCB, Brandwells can meet the demands of the fast-paced construction environment, ensuring their fleet is always equipped to perform, helping them deliver projects on time and to the highest standards.

Craig Waters | Plant Manager

The perfect combination of cutting-edge innovation and deep-rooted tradition defines Brandwells’ approach to its fleet. Under the guidance of Plant Manager Craig Waters, the company is gradually transitioning its fleet to JCB machinery - starting with its 10 JCB excavators - as it is increasingly favouring British engineering excellence. The company also boasts 4 JCB swivel tip 3T-2 Site Dumpers.

A visit to JCB’s World Headquarters left a lasting impression on Craig and the Brandwells team, reinforcing their decision to invest in the brand.

As Craig said: "Last year we were invited up to the factory in Staffordshire by Holt JCB. I have to be honest; it was a genuine eye opener. We were all impressed with the set-up and amazed at how many machines roll off the production line each day.

Commanding Cab

Robert Hawkins | Operator

Brandwells most recent JCB additions to the fleet are four JCB 140X tracked excavators from the ever-popular X Series range. Currently laying the foundations for 53 new Bellway Homes in Axbridge, is one of these models, adorned with the Brandwells 50th anniversary logo. The machine is equipped with advanced safety features, including fall-protection barriers and a Leica 3D GPS machine control system.

The JCB 140X boasts a spacious, industry-leading CommandPlus cab with Grammer seat, ensuring operator comfort during long shifts. Its double cushion viscous mounts deliver a low in-cab noise level of 67dB(A), creating a quieter working environment. The machine's large diameter hydraulic pipes and hoses enhance productivity and efficiency, while the innovative hydraulic regeneration system recycles oil across the cylinders, contributing to fuel savings of up to 5%.

Operator Robert Hawkins, with over 25 years’ experience as an operator, said of the 140X: “I really like it, it’s a nice piece of kit. I’m a big fan of the cab, everything is right where you want it and within easy reach, not behind you. The controls are nice and steady, super smooth, I really notice it when digging these foundations, which is one of my favourite jobs. So yes, I'm impressed with the machine, it’s a pleasure to drive.”

Robert also praised the quality of the 7-inch colour control monitor, which he accesses via the multi-functional toggle dial to his immediate right, stating: "It's all so very clear and easy to use."

Building the future, backed by British engineering

Since making the switch to JCB machinery, the team hasn’t looked back. As they continue to expand and serve the region’s growing housing needs, Brandwells is committed to supporting British manufacturing and working hand-in-hand with JCB to build a legacy - one foundation at a time.
